AmericaSpeaks
gives citizens an authentic voice in local, regional, national and international decision-making on the most challenging public issues of the day. Through their 21st Century Town Meetings and multi-faceted citizen engagement strategies, the organization enables people to simultaneously participate in intimate discussions and contribute to the collective wisdom of a large group. Among other projects, AmericaSpeaks brought large-scale citizen participation to the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site and post-Katrina New Orleans; regional planning and economic development efforts in the greater Chicago area and Northeast Ohio; and statewide health care reform in Maine and California. Founded in 1995, AmericaSpeaks is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C.
Sierra Club's Cool Cities Campaign

In October 2005, the Sierra Club launched its national Cool Cities campaign to organize its extensive grassroots network of volunteer activists and community partners to implement the goals of the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement (USMCPA), initiated by Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels earlier that year. To date, over 650 mayors from the 50 states, the District of  Columbia and Puerto Rico, representing a total population of over 72 million citizens, have signed the MCPA, pledging to reduce global warming pollution in their cities by 7 percent below 1990 levels by the year 2012. Currently, nearly 200 Cool Cities campaigns in every region of the country are working with local governments to implement local global warming solutions such as energy efficiency, cleaner vehicles, smart growth land use planning, public transportation, and renewable power.

Step It Up

On November 3rd, Americans will demand real action on global warming and leaders who can deliver it. From coast to coast, we'll rally in our communities and invite our politicians to join us. We'll see who rises to the occasion and who has a real plan to tackle the defining challenge of our time. One year before the election, let's make sure the world witnesses our national call to action: Step It Up: Its Time for Climate Leaders!
